The law firm of GrahamThompson (GT) was pleased to participate in the Uriah McPhee Primary School’s Literacy Month this past February, 2024, with in-person readings by GT attorneys to students in the School’s second and third grade classes.
GrahamThompson also gifted each of the students in grade three, with copies of the New York Times best selling books, “What To Do With a Chance?”, “What To Do With an Idea?” and “What To Do With a Problem?”. A three-book series by author Kobi Yamada.
Underscoring that “reading is the fundamental step to success as Uriah McPhee Primary School prepares life-long learners”. School Principal Pamela Armaly explained that reading “allows our students to decode and think for themselves”. “It is important”, she explains, “that students are able to identify words, understand what the word means, and connect words to their meaning, so that reading becomes automatic.”
GT Associate Jayel Gibson-Rahming who has been a volunteer reader since the firm began the initiative at the Uriah McPhee Primary School, expressed her hope, “that the time devoted to the programme, will continue to enhance each students’ ability to become a proficient reader”.
Principal Armaly is eyeing an improvement in the School’s GLAT Reading Comprehension results for the 2023-2024 academic year, over last school year’s 75% achievement.
The occasion of GrahamThompson’s visit during this year’s Literacy Month, marked the firm’s first in-person return to the School since the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted their volunteer reading initiative with the School.
In collaboration with the Volunteer Reading Project, GT’s first reading visit to the School was during Literacy Month in February 2018. GT attorneys and staff continued as volunteer readers that school year to the School’s third-graders, taking the initiative into 2019 and 2020 with weekly readings until the pandemic shut down in-person activities.
GrahamThompson is excited about continuing its reading collaboration with the Uriah McPhee Primary School, as part of the firm’s overall commitment to supporting programmes and initiatives that drive educational enrichment.
