Our Story

Peter D. Graham, CMG, founded the law firm of GrahamThompson in 1950. At the time the firm, located on the corner of Bay and Parliament Streets, in the heart of downtown Nassau, carried only the name Peter D. Graham. In 1954 Mr. Graham was joined by Bernard Thompson, and the following year the firm became Graham, Thompson and Co. The firm was subsequently rebranded as GrahamThompson. Today GrahamThompson has attorneys across four offices in the major business centres in The Bahamas.

Peter D. Graham, CMG

Peter Graham led with a passionate belief in The Bahamas and the combined importance of public service, and contributing to the growth and development of the country. He championed principles of hard-work and the delivery of sound practical results for all those we serve. This founding ethos has remained central to the work of the firm and the drive of every GT attorney.

For the 70 continuous years that he practiced, Peter Graham was always the first person in the office, up until his passing in 2020. He was 92 years old, and at the time the most senior member of The Bahamas Bar.

To honour his contribution to The Bahamas and to GrahamThompson, in November 2019, the firm kicked off its 70th anniversary celebrations, with the first ever Peter D. Graham Distinguished Lecture. This inaugural lecture was delivered by GrahamThompson Alumnus, The Honourable Sir Michael L. Barnett, Justice of Appeal.

Although interrupted by the COVID19 pandemic, The Peter D. Graham Distinguished Lecture Series continued in 2023. That lecture was delivered by then GT Senior Partner Sean G.McWeeney, KC. The third lecture in 2024, was delivered by The Right Honourable Patricia Scotland KC, Secretary-General of The Commonwealth.

A Tradition of Public Service

GrahamThompson Partners are widely known for their contributions to the development of The Bahamas, through their participation in political, judicial and public service sectors.

Our Partners have served as Attorneys-General, Chief Justice, Justices of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal, Chair of the Judicial Review Commission, Senators and Cabinet Ministers.

GrahamThompson has contributed significantly to legislative and regulatory framework of The Bahamas, notably in the financial services sector, including the trust, corporate, data protection, privacy and fintech industries.

Philanthropy

GrahamThompson rounds out its legacy of public service with community-based giving. While there are initiatives and causes that the firm supports on a year-round basis, GrahamThompson is intentional in identifying programmes that support youth in areas of education and sports development. This is where the firm believes that its giving can have the greatest impact.

GrahamThompson supports the Lyford Cay Foundation’s FOCUS programme (“Forward, On to College, Upward to Success”), “an out-of-school-time, tuition-free enrichment programme geared at preparing public school students for college readiness”.
