GrahamThompson Partner Aliya Allen presented at the recent Compliance Day Conference hosted by The Bahamas Association of Compliance Officers (BACO).

A panelist on the subject “Why does ESG matter to me and my organisation?”, Aliya provided a snapshot of what ESG [Environmental, Social and Governance] means for The Bahamas and how the country’s domestic context differs from the global landscape. She shared insights into the regulatory context underpinning ESG and its influence on capital markets and investments funds in The Bahamas. Noting various considerations for governing boards as they navigate effective implementation of ESG factors with managing litigations risks. She also highlighted compliance aspects essential for board follow through.

Joining Aliya on this panel were Kevin Cambridge, Advisory & ESG Partner of PwC Bahamas, and Capt. Cameron Gibson, Berthing Master & Project Manager for Equinor.

Aliya Allen is a Partner in the law firm of Graham Thompson, and Co-Chair of the firm’s Corporate and Financial Services Practice Group. Her practice focuses primarily on banking, investment funds, securities, securitisation and capital markets, including regulatory matters such as FATCA, CRS, AML/CFT. Aliya has written extensively on the legislative and regulatory framework for financial services in The Bahamas and has played a leading role in the development and revision of industry defining legislation. Her practice also includes technology, FinTech, blockchain and digital assets. She has been a prominent player in the development of policy initiatives promoting these areas and is a recognized thought leader on the digital assets business sector in The Bahamas. In 2023 she was recognised by IFLR 1000 as a Notable Practitioner and Leading Lawyer; distinctions she has held since 2020.
